Holy shit, I had no idea you were a music writer, and a very, very good one to boot. What else you got up your sleeve?
I’m not a Golijov fan but I loved your interview, and the “Brokeback Mountain” soundtrack composer info was totally news to me.
Though Dawn Upshaw’s voice isn’t to everyone’s taste, I think she’s God. Have a good time on Sunday.

Thanks Mike!
I can’t imagine how people wouldn’t like Dawn Upshaw’s voice. I’ve seen her sing three or four times now; she’s always been great, but sometimes you have the sense that a lot of music is just too easy for her. I think that’s why she likes “Ayre.” It challenges her, and brings out a gritty darkness in her voice that you might not guess was there.
My personal choice for God on earth these days is Gustavo Santaolalla. I had a chance to meet him. He’s utterly charming despite his incredible achievements as a writer, songwriter, musician, record producer, activist, on and on. Besides his Oscar, he’s won five Grammy awards.
Yet when he produced “Ayre,” Golijov told me, Santaolalla liked to say to the composer: “Maybe this time I’ll get it right.”

Golijov?! You are so fortunate. He is touched by the gods. I have been fortunate to hear him speak when Isaac the Blind premiered at the Santa Rosa Symphony.
I felt enchanted.
