Dear Kit: I got thrown out of my freelance-for-life, easy graphics gig at Wells Fargo Bank after close to thirty years in 2002, when San Francisco’s economy was seriously in the tank because of a combination of the dot-com bust and no foreign tourists for a couple of years after 9/11. I couldn’t get a job as a hot-dog seller at minimum wage in the city, and frankly it was pretty scary.
So I just decided to stop looking at the “jobs offered” ads on Craigslist and work at being an artist instead, joining a few amateur theatrical groups, learning photography, and coming up with my own voice over a period of years. I don’t regret a moment of it. Good luck, dude. You’re more than an elf.
