Cold and starry have been the nights down here in March 2006, which reminded me of clear Sierra nights and the talented Tom Killion’s woodcut prints.
Killion grew up in my home town, Mill Valley, but has gone on to make quite a name for himself, both as an artist and a scholar. His book of prints, "The High Sierra of California"–which includes unusually good quotes from John Muir, and excerpts from poet Gary Snyder’s mountain diaries–is surely the best Sierran book published this century to date, and it’s a superb advertisement for Killion’s own work. Because he works in prints, much of his art can be had for an amazingly reasonable price.
