Jon challenges Emily’s underlying premise (hard work is good) with a fair question. And it’s true, I’m sure all of us have had moments when we wondered if work itself wasn’t really a waste of time — why not just enjoy life?
But I think the people we admire in the long run are those who do something in this world. Be they hippies or not. I know there are some saints and mystics who don’t work, exactly, but even Gandhi got a lot done. And I think when we look back at the hippie movement, the people we remember are the hard workers — Dale Chihuly, Neil Young, Alice Waters — not to mention countless craftspeople who might not be as famous.
Maybe work isn’t everything, but it’s not nothing. Self-enjoyment is pretty much nothing for anyone else but the enjoyer.
