A Short but Unfair Review of “The 11th Hour”

If there is one thing the imminent end of the world should not be, it’s boring.

I’m sorry, but as much as I admire producer Leonardo DiCaprio for his acting and his long-standing commitment to environmental causes, this is a godawful piece of film.

"The 11th Hour" knows a lot about science and the earth, but next to nothing about movies. Movies are about show, not tell. Even Al Gore, long considered a stiff on camera, understood this. Moving pictures, Leonardo, not talking heads. This sincerely dreadful piece of preaching is all talking heads, with a few brief clips of various catastrophes. As an unsurprising consequence, despite being well-promoted, the film has been a total disaster at the box office.

I know, that was completely uncalled for. But it’s true, and somebody has to say it.

  1. Are you aware that it’s not a movie, but a documentary? Documentaries are seldom, if ever, entertaining. They are informative.

  2. Yes, of course I know. I’m not expecting a song-and-dance, and note that I didn’t criticize the doc for being gloomy. Given the situation, gloom is fitting. But in the same way that it doesn’t make sense to make a radio documentary featuring big visuals, it doesn’t make sense to make a movie documentary of one talking head after another. Anything that plays in a movie theatre is, in some respects, a movie. “The 11th Hour” doesn’t get that, unfortunately.

  3. It’s a documentary and never pretended to be anything but. Sorry, but “anything that plays in a theatre is in some respects a movie” doesn’t excuse the misdirection of reviews.

Criticism should address its merits only insofar as its worth as a documentary.

  4. Well, personally I think environmental documentaries can be compelling with or without words, as “Koyaanisqatsi” and Al Gore proved, each in their own way. But evidently you liked this one. Can you tell us why?

  5. While waiting to hear WingNut13’s review of the documentary, which I have not seen yet, but take Kit’s “unfair review” as a good response to something that did not work for him, as he says, I would just like to say it is not the 11th hour, it is 11:55 pm…..
